Mahtomedi Schools 2016 Pavement Reconstruction

Mahtomedi Public Schools had three sites that were in need of pavement reconstruction. Two sites had proposed segmental permeable paving in the parking lots. The District Office would have permeable pavers in nearly every parking stall calling for about 14,000 SF. The Elementary School would propose permeable pavers to replace their entire south parking lot and all the parking stalls in the new parking lot, therefore calling for around 20,700 SF total. The Mahtomedi District specified PaveDrain because of its unique industrial design, the capabilities of withstanding the weight of multiple school busses, and stormwater runoff solution. The system is a patented arch design under the nearly 6″ thick paver that acts as an internal storage chamber that can be used as a reservoir for stormwater runoff. Being a fairly new product to the hardscape industry, Structures was one of the first installers to use a Probst Paver Machine to install this product, and had much success. The Probst allowed for a timely install, while not jeopardizing aesthetics. In the end, Mahtomedi Public Schools got an amazing stormwater solution with segmental permeable pavers.

Leinenkugel Malt Handling Building

The Leinenkugel Brewing Company was expanding. To build a new Malt Handling building on their Chippewa Falls property, would require massive regrading. A three tiered retaining wall was proposed. During the design phase of the project, it was discovered that there was a large amount of weathered rock in the existing slope. Structures worked closely with the wall designer, Civil Design Professionals, and proposed a series of soil nails to act as reinforcement for the bottom two tiers to minimize excavation efforts. The owner accepted this design and saved the project on time and money. The top tier was able to be constructed with typical geogrid reinforcement. In the end, the Diamond Pro block unit and a value engineered wall design provided a high quality finish and substantial performance.

Liberty Center

The Liberty Center is a multi-use center consisting of over 100 acres of shops, restaurants, residences, and many small business and retail. The site called for seven retaining walls, two of which were design/build to withstand vehicular impact and support two bridge entrances to the parking garage. Positive Connection (PC) Units were used to reinforce the fill material that structurally supports the driveway to the parking structures. Another PC Wall was used to fill grade at the retail trucking docks and was designed to support heavy loaded vehicles. Another PC Wall was designed with a large storm sewer culvert coming through the middle of it that supports the primary drainage area for the entire property.

Downtown East Commons

The city of Minneapolis has called the Downtown East Commons project a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to design and build a new public open space in downtown Minneapolis. The project is a new 4.2 acre public park located in the center of the new Wells Fargo Towers, residential buildings, light rail station, and the new US Bank Stadium (Home of the Minnesota Vikings) that completes the new Downtown East of Minneapolis. The concrete pavers make up over 21,000 SF of walkways and plaza areas. These areas are a side-by-side combination of permeable pavers and non-permeable pavers. The non-permeable pavers are Belgard Moduline consisting of a three color random blend laid on top of a concrete slab. The 80mm Moduline paver was selected to withstand vehicular traffic such as food trucks and large pedestrian traffic. The permeable pavers are Belgard/Anchor Holland pavers consisting of a four color blend of red pavers. There are over 4,500 SF of permeable pavers and were constructed to go over structural soil so the water feeds trees planted within the walkways. The Commons will serve the people of the Minneapolis region as well as host events connected to US Bank Stadium.

The Legacy Ship

The NFL’s Minnesota Vikings created the Legacy Ship at their new stadium to allow fans to create a memento to honor their family and friends’ connection to the team. The first phase of the ship was completed with about 5,000 SF of custom engraved granite pavers. The pavers were set on a sand setting bed atop a concrete base structure. The Vikings continue to gain interest from the fans to add to the Legacy Ship and more square footage has been proposed.

Newport Pavilion

The Newport Pavilion property was growing and needed to expand their parking lot to account for new business. This meant going into a hillside that would require a large retaining wall. The owner wanted the Allan Block Europa for the segmental walls, and to save money, added a 1.5H:1V Vegetated Slope instead of a segmental block wall. The Enkmat R45 is able to stabilize the slope and allow grass to grow over time. Structures had a strict tie-off safety plan in place that was site specific for this project.

Mankato Public Safety Building

This project includes over 5,000 SF of Gabion Basket retaining walls. The walls were designed with a maximum height of 14′ with enough geogrid reinforcement to support heavy vehicular loading, such as firetrucks. The baskets were filled with limestone rip-rap rock. Each rock was hand placed at the face of the basket to meet high aesthetic standards set forth by the Mankato Architecture team.

Rose Ct Rehabilitation

In 2014, this wall failed due to excessive water runoff coming to the back of the retaining wall off the roof of the houses. Structures was tasked to not only rebuild the wall, but design a sustainable storm water drainage solution for the site. Structures contracted Krueger Excavating to preform the site utility work and install Helical Anchors. The Anchors were used to minimize the excavation efforts to maintain the housing structures safely above.

The Charmant Hotel

The Charmant Hotel was originally constructed in 1898 and has become an iconic travel spot for the City of Lacrosse. The hotel underwent major renovations in 2015, but in an effort to keep its historic value, the renovation project would include Cobblestones and Granite Curbing that is nearly 400 years old and reclaimed from Europe.
